Photosynthesis 1

Year 08 Topic 1: Photosynthesis.
20 Learning Opportunities from Monday the 30th of March until Friday the 15th of May.

Learning Opportunity 1: Photosynthesis.
This Learning opportunity has four tasks to do.
Target Time: 60 minutes.

By the end of this learning episode you need to be able to:
Recall that plants make their own food using photosynthesis
Interpret word equations for photosynthesis and aerobic respiration
Explain how the rate of photosynthesis can be controlled by a limiting factor

Task 1:  Write down your ideas.
Write down why you think plants are green.
Check your answers at the end.

WHY AM I GREEN?

Task 2: Copy and Complete a diagram.
Copy the diagram below. Next, use the video underneath to find where each word goes.

Task 3 Challenge Task! Write three sentences and then use a graph to explain Limiting Factors.
Check your answers at the end of the blog.
Fact: The rate (speed) of photosynthesis can be controlled by a limiting factor.
Watch the video again if you need to.
Then write down three things that could stop (limit) Photosynthesis.
A)
B)
C)
Now look at this graph.

Now copy and complete these sentences. The words you need are at the bottom.
At point A on the graph, increasing the light intensity causes an_______________________ in the rate of photosynthesis because it is a ____________________ ___________________.
At point B on the graph, increasing the light intensity ________________________ on the rate of photosynthesis because photosynthesis is now limited by either ___________________________ or ____________________ _________________________ concentration.

Key words: has no effect carbon dioxide Limiting factor increase temperature

Task 4: Check your answers, and try the diagnostic quiz!
Task 1: Plants are green for photosynthesis. The leaves contain chlorophyll, inside chloroplasts, and this is where photosynthesis takes place. Chlorophyll is a green chemical.
Task 2: Water + Carbon Dioxide –> Glucose and Water. The top and bottom boxes are sunlight and chlorophyll – these just help the reaction so they are not in the equation.
Task 3: Water, Warmth, Carbon Dioxide can all limit photosynthesis.
increase, Limiting Factor, has no effect, water, Carbon Dioxide.

Now try the diagnostic Quiz!
