Changing Economic World 9

Introduction – Today’s learning is about loans and debt. It’s a little bit complex in places, but we have included less material and fewer tasks to allow for you to get to grips with it. So don’t give up!

Task 1 – LOANS AND THE DEBT CRISIS

This is a bit longer but it’s my explanation of loans and debt

Based on the information above about loans and debt relief:

➀ What is debt relief? Write in your own words
➁ Why can some countries not afford to pay off their debt?
➂ How can debt relief help countries to develop?
➃ Based on what you know so far, do you think it was right for banks and organisations to lend large sums of money in the 1960s, 70s and 80s?

Task 2 – MICROFINANCE LOANS

LOANS – A diagram of the positive multiplier effect

Watch the videos and use the multiplier effect diagram to help answer these questions

➄ In your own words, describe what microfinance is (first video and multiplier effect diagram)
➅ Using the second video and your own thinking, why might microfinance NOT be the answer to lifting people out of poverty and reducing uneven development?

Task 3 – WEIGHING UP THE EVIDENCE

➆ Use the structure below to plan an answer to this question – it draws together what you have learned about strategies so far
➇ Have a go at writing a full answer to the question
