How to prepare for your GCSE Presentation 2 of 3

What do I need to do why?

  • As you know, you need to prepare a Speaking and Listening presentation as part of your English Language GCSE
  • There are 3 grades available: Distinction, Merit or Pass
  • It is not included as a percentage of your whole GCSE but it appears as a distinct and separate grade on your certificate

In the last session you were asked to…..

  • Start preparing for your speech or presentation
  • Think about what you would like to talk about
  • Mind map some possible ideas
  • This Blog will help you write and prepare for your assessment
  • You must agree the subject for your speech/presentation with your teacher

You will need to download this planning sheet

Should I do a speech or a presentation?

Speech

A speech is usually a statement about how you feel about something- this could be an issue which is important to you. If you have chosen to write about an issue that you feel strongly about then choose this option. These are quite often persuasive. With this option you can use powerpoint or other props to help you.

Successful topics in the past: Racism in Football, corruption in sport, celebrity culture, issues to do with mental health– particularly anxiety, concerns about ” the ideal body” image and how this is presented in our society. Students have been successful when they have been really “bothered” about a subject.

Presentation

A presentation usually lends itself to explaining a topic, idea, experience or interest. It is better to choose this one if you want to talk through a powerpoint or a set of visual images or props. Presentations tend to be informative and educational, however, they might also be persuasive

You Do

  • Now you will need the planning sheet you have downloaded and your mind map
  • Students find it really helps if they write out their speech or presentation to begin with
  • Work through the worksheet to help you to craft the content of your speech

Once it is written you will then need to rehearse it, time it and learn it. You do not have to learn it word for word and you must not read it in the final presentation but you will remember phrases and ideas from the writing and this will become familiar to you. The next stage will be to condense your writing into note form or bullet points.

Look back at what you have written and planned

  • Do you have a clear structure?
  • Make sure you have used some techniques to engage your listener. Check out this video to remind yourself of how important it is to engage your audience
